Today our task for the day was to improve a classical Robin Day chair with a design idea. The project started with the research on the meanings of “comfort”, “customisation” and “function” , areas which should have been considered in our final outcome . During the researching, I found out that there is a number of similar positions of people siting on the chir: laid back, crossing their legs or otherwise. Although majority still prefers to sit in a classical position with legs down, everybody put their legs differently: some cross their feet, others don’t reach the floor or twitch their feet while sitting. When we came back to the class after sketching I realised that the design I would like to develop was directed on both the movement of legs and a struggle of reaching the floor. Next step was to draw the final design and produce a small paper model, which would display the idea. When a small model was ready I took a picture of it on the black background. Analysing my work, I think I could make it better by working on a big scale and developing the mathematical design to improve their function. I believe, that my chair covers all tree criteria, however the disadvantage is that it would occupy some extra space in the room. The most I enjoyed about this project is the research part, as we had to interact with people, notice and analyse their behaviour in order to create an independent idea. However, I found it challenging being limited by a specific base (Robin Day chair) and time. All in all, through this project I discovered a new method creating an idea (observation) and another way of displaying it by creating a small paper model.
